20 ways to de-ex your life

23 September 2010 By Dorothy 33 Comments

Why 20?  Because that’s what I’ve done so far.  Please add yours below…

  1. Close joint bank accounts – check!
  2. Change all utilities to just your name – check!
  3. Remove your ex as an additional card holder from your credit card – check!
  4. Get his name of the mortgage, sell the family home if you have to – check!
  5. Move, so his mail no longer appears in your mailbox – check!
  6. Post all his remaining stuff to him, no matter the expense – check
  7. Donate all the rest – check!
  8. Buy a new wallet, because old one was a gift from ex – check!
  9. Get a net dinner set, because the old one was a wedding present – check!
  10. A bargain Fossil handbag

  11. Buy a new handbag, just because you like it and the old one was falling apart  – check!
  12. Replace all mugs, because all cups/mugs in hte cupboard were either bought together or as gifts from ex – check!
  13. Get rid of all large teapots, because they were used to make pots of tea for family breakfasts for years – check!
  14. Seal all wedding photos in a shoe box, great idea from a FB friend – check!
  15. Finally throw out the sugar flowers from your wedding cake – check!
  16. Buy a new frying pan, because the ones you have were bought together and the new one was on special – check!
  17. Buy new shoes, because all the ones you own are wearing out and the guilt involved in buying stuff for yourself is now gone – check!
  18. Buy your own new iPod, because the two old ones you have were hand-me-downs from your ex – check!
  19. Install a new car stereo, because the one you have was stuffed up by your ex leaving a CD stuck in it and never doing anything about it – check!
  20. Have fun in the pool and at the beach with your boys, because your ex could not swim, would not learn and was terrified of water – check!
  21. Family photo albums – still mulling this one over….   All suggestions will be considered …

What else can I do to de-ex my life?

Battered sausage on a stick! Odd…

Gotta love accessories, especially when you only get them once every five years… The photo albums are tricky. Full of photos of the boys and me. I could cull all the ex ones, but not ready yet…

Hi Bobby and welcome to my blog! I'm glad you think I'm original. I want to be different. I am different. And yes, it is extremely good therapy! A good friend of mine often said that she was her best therapist. I didn't quite get what she meant at the time, but now I am beginning to see that it is our ability to express ourselves, in whatever ways we can that provides us with the best path to healing….

    Thanks for your comment!

How weird is it that that's the handbag I lusted after for months?!!?

Also? I might have to hold on to this list for future reference. Ah-hem.

LOL! That handbag is now retired as it wasn’t big enough for all my daily stuff. However, all my daily stuff now fits into another Fossil handbag. Which is hurting my shoulder much. My daily stuff may need to be culled…. Good luck!

Looks like a pretty good list… Did you buy all new underwear/lingerie, exactly as you like it? You could do that next…

De-exing can be a pain in the ass.  This is a good list, I think I still have one or two things in the house from an ex-fiancee long gone, and this after 2 moves and 10 years of marriage to Wifefish.  I shoulda had a list!

I like this list – particularly the bit about the sugar flowers from the wedding cake!  The new hand bag is also gorgeous.

Hehehe! Lists are good, but just wanting to break with the past is as good an incentive as any list. I was/am determined to completely cut loose from what was…

Dorothy, quite a comprehensive list! I especially like the going swimming part, that would have been truly liberating! And going out and buying things just for yourself without any guilt – definitely a way to embrace your new life. Enjoying the rewind this weekend. Kirsty @ My Home Truths.

Well, this is spoken from the other side of the fence- please remove him from the car insurance policy so when you get in an accident the person you hit and their insurance company doesn't go after him. Unless you really really hate him….

This was 8 years after the fact so it wasn't all that funny.

Great list. With the photos – I just put mine in a box for the time my kids want to go through them, and I don't have to look at them 🙂 They are in a box in the top of the cupboard rather than in the roof (where the wedding photos are).

Unfortunately a lot of mine are in albums. From before we had digital cameras. So if I ever want to look at photos of my kids when they were little, I have to look at him too. I may have to do a cull one day when I’m really bored…

Perhaps it is time to get a replacement ex? Have you further de-exed since this post? I think an update is required… Thanks for Rewinding x
