This question was asked several times at the Problogger Training Event I attended this weekend.
And every single time I was stumped.
It’s not that I don’t have a vision for how I want my life. I am very clear about the kind of lifestyle I want, but I have no idea about what my personal dream might be.
To help us think about our dreams, we were also asked about what we wanted to be when we were children and what we loved to do as children. Apparently, those answers would give us clues to our dreams and what we should be doing now with our lives.
Well, I just wanted to be whatever TV character was popular at the time. A war time nurse, a young sleuth, or a princess. I loved collecting stamps, painting and exploring my neighbourhood. Also, I really, really wanted to be famous, to “show” all those kids who kept picking on me. The fame would come to me as an actress, a singer, or a model, but beyond that I really had no clear driving goal.
Another common theme was the desire to be a wife and a mother. Well, look how that turned out. Mothering is certainly not my favourite thing, at least not as a sole parent.
My main goals in life are to give my children a good childhood, full of good memories and to do my best to create two caring, decent, emotionally balanced young men. But I wouldn’t call either of those a dream.
Living in Byron Bay is a dream, so is travelling as much as I can, but neither of those give me any clues about what to do “when I grow up”. Or how to live my perfect life.
I really don’t see myself as a travel blogger, even though that seems like the most obvious path to follow. I wouldn’t even know where to start. Am I just scared? According to Darren Rowse, “fear is a sign that something important is about to happen”.
So while I sit here pondering, I’d really like to hear from you. What is your dream? What did you want to do when you were a child?
