Unlike most film follow ups, Monsters University is not a sequel to Monsters Inc., something I was dreading. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it’s a prequel, focusing on Mike and Sulley’s college years.
The film starts with Mike Wazowski still in primary school, going on a filed trip to the Monsters Inc. Scare Factory. There he discovers his future calling and the scene is set for the rest of the movie.
Fast forward to college and we see Mike arriving at Monsters University, where we meet a host of new characters as well as some known to us from the previous film. Before long, Sulley arrives on the scene and the two main characters begin their now famous relationship.
The plot sees the characters having to fight for a place in the Scare Program by entering the Scare Games and provides some valuable lessons on teamwork and friendship.
Monsters University is fast paced and entertaining and did not have me checking the clock or looking for excuses to walk away from the TV and DVD player, like most kids’ movies. I did not want to miss a minute and kept putting off making the boy’s lunch, until they paused the DVD. This, for me, is a true test of a kids’ movie and the verdict for Monsters University is “Very watchable” It really feels like a whole new movie rather than a recycling of an old idea.
Both boys sat quietly through the whole film, despite having already seen it on the big screen, which again is a testament to its watchability.
If you loved Monsters Inc., you will love Monsters University.
