The thing about having opinions is that, unless you explain them really well, they can often appear contradictory.
These may seem contradictory, but they’re not.
You were not meant to be vanilla. As my friend, Michelle Holmes, says, you were meant to be wasabi. Not only that, but you were meant to be your own special blend of wasabi.
My job is to take that wasabi and show it to the online world. My job is to make it, and you, shine.
The reason I get so annoyed with all that vanilla is because I know you can do better. I know that, inside, you are golden and shiny. Or maybe dark and prickly, or maybe something else; but I want you to have the courage to show THAT to the world and not worry about what “others” say. Because the world needs YOU. Not more vanilla, not more of the same, but more of YOU – in all you shiny, golden, warty, prickly glory. When you are showing that to the world and when you see that there are those who like you because, rather than despite, of your YOUNESS, you will have found your place in the world, things will seem easy and you will be loving what you do.
I get annoyed when people try to follow the same advice, the same formula as everyone else. Be different. Follow different advice. Follow advice that feels right for you. You may not find it in all the usual places, but it’s your job to look for it and find it. Yes, ask questions, but don’t rely on others to give you the answers that will work for you. Your answers are going to be the result of hard work, research and lots of trial and error.
It’s OK to try different things and abandon them when they don’t work for you. It’s OK to fail. But it’s not OK to give up.
And finally, invest in yourself. If you want to follow that inner calling, whether it’s to be a blogger, a writer, or a scarf maker – spend money on learning how to do it. Spend money on teaching yourself how to do stuff. I found it incredibly empowering to invest in my first online business course. Finally, I was taking myself seriously.
So take yourself seriously and stop being vanilla.
