The boys and I recently watched an episode of Good Game on ABC 3 where the presenters bagged Skylanders GIANTS, for all the very reasons that my kids (and I) love it. Here is why:
Lots of new characters with the potential for pester power. I see it as a great source of small
bribes rewards for the kids. I rarely succumb to pester power, but I do like to buy small things for my children every now and then, or give them an opportunity to earn a reward, or save their pocket money. Personally, I’m sick of mountains of useless, one-play, breakable plastic invading the house, so being able to purchase a new Skylander (and there are so many!) which extends game play and renews their interest in the game is a bonus.
It’s too easy! Well, d’oh! It’s targeted at primary school-aged children, not teenage game pros, so of course game play needs to be achievable. There are so many games that are simply beyond
me my kids once you get to the higher levels, that you wonder why you’ve spent the money. Skylanders provides game play suited to its target audience (and their parents), where the end game is actually reachable and winnable, not frustratingly impossible to reach.
There is nothing new in game play. Yes, game play is the same, but that is the whole point of a sequel – the players want more of the same, not something completely different. Plus all of the old characters can be played in the new game and can level up to level 15, rather than the 10 from the previous game. Not to mention the eight new GIANTS and eight new Lightcore characters.
I also love that the Portal of Power included in the Skylander GIANTS Starter Pack is corded, rather than cordless, as in the previous game. As convenient as that idea is, I was really sick of constantly replacing the three batteries. Now the PoP is connected to the Wii by a cord and there is no more moans of “Muuuuum, the Portal doesn’t work….!”
Also, there are new game play options in Battle Mode, enhanced Elemental Zones and new Hero Challenges. (I don’t even know what that means, but the boys tell me it’s all good.)
If you don’t want to buy a whole new Starter Pack, a Portal Owner’s Pack is also available, which includes the game and one GIANT. The “old” Portal works with the new game, as do all the “old” characters.
I received a free Skylanders GIANTS Starter Pack and attended a pre-launch event, courtesy of Activision. Opinions are my own.
