My boys have been baiting at the bit for the last several months, ever since they heard about the new Skylanders game being released.
They have scoured YouTube and Google for any images and videos they could find to feed their obsession.
When we finally got our invitations to the official preview back in August, they knew that the end was in sight. Both boys loved the new characters, the new world and the new missions. At the preview, only two missions were available and they finished those in no time, eager for more.
And then, the magical card in the mailbox, letting us know that a parcel had arrived.

Yes! Skylanders Swap Force is in the house and is the current obsession of choice. The latest offering in the Skylanders franchise comes with new characters to collect, new missions and new game play. Characters can now jump, which, apparently, is very important.

The marketing genius behind Skylanders means that pestering for new characters has already commenced, before the game is even officially released. There are 16 new Swap Force characters that come in two halves and can be mixed and matched for the best combination of powers for specific missions and tasks.
My boys called the game “Epic!” and “The best ever!”. They tell me that the graphics are “awesome!” and they love that it’s now so much easier to get three stars on a mission due to the removal of time limits.
They would happily talk to me for hours about the game, but I’m sure that I need to dust something or wash my hair.
I’ve said before that Skylanders is a perfect game for primary school aged children with game play they can easily master and a great story they can get involved in. It is not meant for serious gamers, but easy enough for non-gaming parents to figure out and not get frustrated with.
My 10 year old finished all the missions in two days, which suggests to me that he is probably getting too old, or too good for it, but he is still excited about getting new characters and using them to explore the levels again to find additional treasures and try out new moves. The 7 year old likes playing with his brother in two player mode, or plodding along by himself through missions at a much slower pace.
The starter pack includes the game (Wii, Xbox, Playstation, DS), the Portal of Power and three characters, including two Swap Force ones. Characters can be used across all platforms.
Skylanders Swap Force is officially released on October 16 and because I was accidentally sent two copies, I have one (the Wii version) to give away! I just ask that the winner pays for postage.
